Did the Kandahar Giant really exist?
There have long been rumors that U.S. special forces killed a giant nearly 12 feet tall in Afghanistan in 2002. In August 2016, an American YouTuber uploaded a video interview with a man identified only as “Mr. K,” an arms dealer. In the interview, Mr. K described a special military operation he claimed to have taken part in back in 2002.
According to his account, the mission was carried out as part of the international coalition in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. During that time, he said, he witnessed U.S. special forces shoot and kill what became known as the Kandahar Giant.
Mr. K described the creature as nearly 12 feet tall, with blazing red hair and six fingers on each hand. In a violent confrontation with the unit, the giant allegedly killed one special forces member with a spear before the rest of the team brought it down after 30 seconds of sustained gunfire.
Over time, the story became even more exaggerated. Some versions claimed the giant stood more than 15 feet tall, had a strange appearance, wore soft leather shoes, and smelled like a corpse. It was said to have suddenly charged out of the cave and stabbed an American soldier named “Dan” with a spear before collapsing under heavy gunfire after about 30 seconds.
Another version of the story claimed the team was armed with fully automatic M4 carbines, semi-automatic scout carbines, and Barrett M107 anti-materiel rifles chambered in .50 BMG. Firepower of that level, the story argued, would have been enough to kill any living creature almost instantly. After the giant was killed, its body was allegedly loaded onto a Chinook helicopter and was never seen again. The soldiers involved were then supposedly forced to sign secrecy agreements and ordered never to speak about what happened, though some were later said to have broken their silence.
That response, however, only seemed to encourage speculation in some corners of the media, where people argued that the U.S. government was trying to hide the truth from the public.
Around the same time Snopes published its article questioning the story, self-described occult researcher L.A. Marzulli told several media outlets that the U.S. government had covered up the incident out of fear that the truth would threaten its interests and cause public panic. He argued that people had a right to know. If 12- to 15-foot-tall beings were roaming the Earth and the military had killed one, he said, American citizens deserved to be told. In his view, it was not a military secret, and the giant was connected to biblical prophecy.
In these legends, the Kandahar Giants are often described as descendants of a god or some other mythical being. They are portrayed as enormous creatures with extraordinary strength.
The giants were said to have once lived in the mountains around Kandahar, Afghanistan. According to the legends, they built massive structures, including enormous towers and defensive walls. But over time, they gradually disappeared from the world. Different stories offer different explanations for what happened to them. Some say they were wiped out in wars with rival tribes. Others claim they were destroyed by natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. Still others say they were cursed by a god or a powerful sorcerer.
Even though the Kandahar Giants are said to have vanished, they are still believed by some to have left traces in local culture and history. Various places in Afghanistan are said to bear names connected to them, and stories about them continue to be told to this day.
In 2016, L.A. Marzulli linked the story to biblical prophecy, claiming the creatures were Nephilim, a group mentioned in the books of Genesis and Numbers in the Old Testament. These beings are often interpreted as people of unusual size and strength who supposedly existed in the Middle East before and after the Great Flood.
Most biblical scholars, however, agree that the stories of the Nephilim are symbolic rather than evidence that literal 12- to 15-foot giants once roamed the desert.

The Legend of the Kandahar Giant
According to the story, in 2002 a patrol of soldiers lost contact with their base while operating in the remote mountains of southern Afghanistan near Kandahar. The military then sent a special operations team to investigate. At the top of a mountain, the team reportedly discovered a mysterious cave surrounded by scattered military equipment, but there was no sign of the missing soldiers. That was when, according to the legend, they encountered the Kandahar Giant.Over time, the story became even more exaggerated. Some versions claimed the giant stood more than 15 feet tall, had a strange appearance, wore soft leather shoes, and smelled like a corpse. Government Denials Only Fueled More Conspiracy Theories
In August 2016, Snopes, the fact-checking website known for investigating internet rumors and urban legends, contacted the U.S. Department of Defense about the alleged Kandahar Giant incident. The Pentagon stated clearly that it had no record of any special forces members being killed by a Kandahar Giant, nor did it have any information about such a creature at all. That response, however, only seemed to encourage speculation in some corners of the media, where people argued that the U.S. government was trying to hide the truth from the public.
