YouTube TV Is About to Let You Watch Anything Side-by-Side — Not Just Sports

YouTube TV is finally unlocking one of its most requested features — and it could completely change how people watch live TV.

Before streaming took over, some TVs had a feature called picture-in-picture (PiP), which let you watch two things at once. For example, you could keep a live sports game running in a small window while watching a movie on the main screen.

YouTube TV took that idea further with its multiview feature, allowing users to watch up to four live streams at the same time on a single screen. It works across popular streaming devices like Roku, Google TV, and Apple TV — all within the YouTube TV app.

But until now, there was a catch.

From Fixed Layouts to Full Control

Multiview used to be limited to pre-selected channel combinations, and it was mainly useful for live sports. If you didn’t like the preset lineup, you were out of luck.

That’s finally changing.

YouTube TV is now rolling out a major update that gives users far more control. Instead of being stuck with curated bundles, you’ll be able to choose exactly which four channels you want to watch at the same time.

Early users report that the new multiview supports nearly all available channels, removing one of the biggest limitations of the feature.

This isn’t a brand-new tool — but it’s a massive upgrade that makes multiview genuinely useful for everyday viewing. You can now mix and match live sports, news, TV shows, and even movies on the same screen, arranged however you like.

Naturally, the experience works best on larger TVs, where the extra screen space makes it easier to follow multiple streams at once.

How the New Multiview Works

According to reports from Android Authority, the updated multiview mode includes a redesigned menu that lets you pick channels on the fly.

When you open multiview in the YouTube TV app, you’ll see:
  • A selection menu to choose your channels
  • Pre-built categories like Sports, News, Shows, Movies, and Recommended
  • A quick view of currently live channels at the top
Selecting a channel instantly adds it to your multiview layout, making the setup process much more flexible than before.

Not Everyone Has It Yet

There’s one downside: the feature is still rolling out gradually.

That means not all users will see it right away. However, some users on Reddit have already reported getting access.

If you want to check whether it’s available on your device, try this:
  • Start a live stream
  • Press the down arrow on your remote (or tap the player on mobile)
  • Look for the option “Add to multiview”
If it’s there, you’re in.

Part of a Bigger Upgrade Push

This update is just one piece of a broader push to improve YouTube TV.

The platform is also adding AI-powered search features — something that’s already been available on mobile for years — to help users find content faster.

It’s worth noting that YouTube TV is different from the regular YouTube app. It’s a full live TV streaming service from Google, offering traditional cable-style channels along with local programming.

Is It Finally Worth It?

Whether YouTube TV is worth the price still depends on how you watch content.

If you’re into live TV, sports, and cable-style programming, this new multiview flexibility makes it significantly more appealing — and in some cases, even better than competitors like Hulu.

But one thing is clear: with this update, YouTube TV is no longer just copying old TV features — it’s improving them.
