It sounds like the setup to a bad joke, but it raises a surprisingly interesting question: what would actually happen if an astronaut relieved themselves on the Moon?
The lunar surface is about as hostile as an environment can get. There’s no breathable atmosphere, no weather, and virtually no air pressure. Temperatures swing wildly between blistering daytime heat and bone-chilling nighttime cold.
In such an extreme environment, urine wouldn’t behave the way it does on Earth. Because the Moon is essentially a vacuum, the liquid portion would rapidly begin to evaporate or sublimate. Some of the water would instantly turn into vapor, while the remaining material could freeze solid depending on local conditions. The result would be less like a puddle and more like a strange mixture of ice and crystallized waste scattered across the lunar dust.
The real danger, however, isn’t the urine itself—it’s the environment. An astronaut outside a spacecraft depends entirely on a spacesuit and life-support system for survival. Removing or compromising that protection would expose them to lethal vacuum conditions, extreme temperatures, and harmful solar and cosmic radiation. In other words, the Moon is not a place where anyone can simply step aside for a bathroom break.
There’s also a scientific reason to avoid leaving biological waste on the lunar surface. Future missions will continue studying the Moon’s chemistry and geology, searching for clues about its history and the origins of the solar system. Introducing human waste into the environment could contaminate research sites and complicate future scientific measurements.
That’s why astronauts use carefully designed waste-management systems inside their spacesuits and spacecraft. It may not be the most glamorous part of space exploration, but when you’re operating hundreds of thousands of miles from Earth, even something as ordinary as going to the bathroom becomes a carefully engineered challenge.
